Sport and National Pride

Woo Hoo we are in the World Cup Final....How exciting is that??

Despite the fact that I know less than diddly about soccer (sorry football-see what I mean), I sat up and watched the qualifying match against Uruguay last night and WE WON!!!. I nearly bit my fingernails down to my elbows during extra time waiting for us to score and then when we went to penalty shootouts I thought I would bust waiting to see what would happen...

I thought about the 2005 footy season and the Swans winning after x dozen years, the Tigers winning after another x dozen years and it should have been obvious to all that we would get the Trifecta with Australia qualifying for the World Cup after 31 years.

Australians are an amazing bunch. No matter how many differences we have in all walks of life we all become one (and instant experts) when there is a major sporting event happening. As I said, I know less than nothing about soccer/football but I felt that it was my duty to watch the game because if we won I would have kicked myself for not "being there".

One of my abiding memories is of Australia winning the America's Cup. My sons were babies and one of them woke early on the morning of the final. We sat cuddled together in front of the TV watching the race and I had goosebumps. I still remember how excited I was and I know less about sailing then I do about football.

Can't wait for the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Just one thing to say; Aussie, Aussie Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi.
