Friends

I have had a wonderful week of catching up with friends, some of whom I have not seen for five years. It does the heart good to be welcomed with open arms by people and know that they are genuinely pleased to see you.

I realised last year when I was married what wonderful girlfriends I have. My best friends from kindergarten, high school and uni, as well as lots of friends I had made along the way, travelled to Canberra for my wedding. The effort they made to be there made me feel so loved and special.

It was so much fun to see all my mates together saying; "I've heard about you, it is so good to meet you." They then started planning how they could all get together again.( I think this included me).

As I get older I get such joy from watching my friends kids have their own children and become my friend in their own right, not just be polite to Mums' friend.

Moving to Canberra made it harder to make new friends. You don't realise how much your mates are caught up with your childrens' activities, their school friends or sports mates parents become your friends because the kids are the common thread. No kids meant I had to work a bit harder to make friends and as a result they come mostly from work, church or other community activities. The joy of making friends without kids attached means that I often get to do more grown up things. Rather than chatting to mates beside the soccer field or at the school gate I can go to a girly movie, lunch, breakfast, dinner or something more eclectic like a public lecture or a theatre trip.

Old friends are so easy to be with because you don't have to explain lots about yourself, you can just pick up where you left off last time. (Though one did say today; "I just can't keep up with your name changes.")

Friends appear at all the stages of your life and I consider myself blessed to have carried so many friends through so many stages. I also look forward to more new adventures in my life which will mean more new friends.
