The Eternal Search for Happiness
I read a cartoon the other day that said the way to be happy is to stop being unhappy! Sounds trite but it works for me.
So many people spend their life giving the immediate negative response to life. I believe that if you said to half the world; "I have won a million dollars. let's go shopping", that too many people would say; "Do I have to walk?"
I know that the world is not exactly perfect but has it ever been. We have terrorism, war, poverty, crime and general unfairness but I am sure history shows that this has always been. All this tells us is that humans haven't learnt a lot since Adam and Eve ate the apple..
Too many people spend their life waiting for someone else to make them happy and never realise that happiness comes from within. Okay, other people can make your life miserable if you let them, after all we get the treatment we accept. You might feel that this is overly simplistic but I admit to being a bit of a Pollyanna. I wake up looking forward to the day and always have done, even when things were tough. I haven't always had things go my way and I spent far too many years in a bad relationship but I do get mad when people say; "You are lucky you got out." Luck had precious little to do with it, more stupidity that caused me to leave a home I owned, a job I loved and a town that cared for me (not to mention my children), to run off with a bloke I had spent about 10 days with. I risked everything on a belief that a better life was out there and I was right.
I also knew that I could exist by myself if I had to. To me this is the most empowering knowledge to have. While I would never choose to be alone I know I could do it if I have to so I am not afraid. To me this is the secret of my happiness. I have faith in myself, my ability to work and earn money, my ability to live alone and make the best of it and my ability to care about others and have a happy relationship.
I can't change all the bad things in the world but I can make my little piece as happy a place as possible every day. Surely that helps.
