Comfort Food
What is it about some foods that makes us feel good? I have a particular affinity for boiled eggs. Mum used to give me boiled eggs when I was sick and now they just give me a warm cared about feeling.
Some people love chocolate, others ice cream. Funny how lots of comfort food seem to be of the luxury type. I haven't met anyone who craves broccoli when they are feeling low. I think there has to be a certain number of calories and the right amount of grams of fat in comfort food. The boiled eggs were always served with lovely buttery toast which upped the required levels.
On a cold day our thoughts turn to hot steaming bowls of soup or meaty stews with lots of yummy gravy. Hot weather brings on a need for tall cooling drinks, the aforementioned icecream and other icy treats. Broken hearts and other sad occasions also call for special treats of the food variety. I bought and ate chips with gravy for the first time in my life while waiting at the airport after my Dad died. I just had to have those chips, no matter how fatty and gross they would have seemed at any other time.
I guess the lovely part about food is it doesn't talk back (until your clothes don't fit), it can make us feel warm inside and a little more loved and it can evoke memories of times gone by.
Comfort food can also be used to show someone you care. The making of a hot chocolate for a loved one or a hot lemon and honey drink when they are sick can make you both feel better. Think I better go and find some lunch..
