Bus Protocol

It didn't take me long to learn the bus protocol. Walk to the stop looking blankly ahead, do not speak to anyone else waiting at the stop, get on the bus and sit or stand staring blankly ahead for the duration of the journey. Some people make sure no one will make a mistake and speak to them by putting earphones in their ears to listen to their favourite music during the ride. Others send text messages or have mindnumbingly boring conversations at the top of their voice on their mobile phone.

I did make a mistake one wintry friday morning. I spoke to a man at the bus stop. As he approached the stop I said; "Gotta love a Friday". His mouth dropped open in panic and he muttered; "Yeh". I haven't seen him again. Maybe he walks a kilometre or two to catch another bus so he won't have to be spoken to ever again.

You hear the old songs on the radio, "Bus stops, bus goes, she stays love grows under my umbrella." Not these days fella, she is more likely to be beating you up with her umbrella if you speak to her than asking you to share.

How do young people (or indeed old people) fall in love these days if you can't speak to anyone on public transport. No wonder people have no friends, we all wear off limits signs tattooed on our forehead.

I think on the way home this afternoon I might talk to someone.

Similarly Lifts are and interesting place. Have you noticed that the protocol it to stare at a closed door? I find standing with my back to the door smiling and facing everyone gives them no option but to look somewhere else but there is no where else to look. Maybe the bus system should have a back to school day, it always seemed fun on the bus home back then.

haha I am half guilty of this. I always try to smile at people and most of the time all I get is heads turning away with alarming speed or sometimes if your lucky you may get a kind of... half smirk. I think I just gave up in the end. I've found country people are more open to friendly chatter for some reason. Keep up the blogging I'm thoroughly enjoying your words.

Love Eileen
