Broken Hill Tornado

Broken Hill Tornado

What an amazing night has been had in Broken Hill. Living in the middle of town all we were aware of was a magnificent electrical storm followed by a thunderous downpour. We were totally unaware of the havoc being wreaked a couple of kilometres away.

Because Broken Hill does not have any storm water drains heavy rain is always spectacular. From our first storey windows we could see a river running down the lane behind our apartment. Of course there was thunder and lightning but apart from a tiny leak through the bathroom skylight it was no big deal…

So it was with some amazement we woke to Australia wide headlines describing the cyclone (don’t they know cyclones pick up power from the sea) /tornado that had ripped through the south side of town.

Houses were unroofed, trees and fences and even a tennis court were picked up and carried off. A friend who lives in South Broken Hill likened the noise of the wind to a train. Another friend was sitting on her bed when the roof of the house peeled back.
Fortunately no one has been hurt, even though we had a mini New Orleans with 100 people sleeping in the basketball stadium.

It always amazes me that no matter how clever man thinks he is nature has a way of reminding us who is in charge.

I was already a firm believer in nature's dominance when we had to scurry from the verandah, wine glasses in hand!

'Cyclone in the desert' is a fantastic tagline or news coverage though.....
