Birthdays

Birthdays that don't last at least a fortnight are not worth having in my humble opinion. I have been having birthday dinners for 2 weeks now and even though my birthday was last Friday I can probably squeeze another couple in before the festivities finally fade away.

I am very sentimental about birthdays, mine and other peoples. I love the whole present giving and getting thing and I particularly enjoy shopping for presents. I am one of those sick people that leaves their Christmas shopping till Christmas Eve cause it is so much fun.

Aging has never bothered me. I haven't had a trauma at turning 30, 40 or any other number. I always figure there are others who are not so lucky and the alternative to aging is not a state I want to be in for at least another 50 years.

I have a friend who pretends she is about 5 years younger than she is. It obviously hasn't occurred to her that if anyone bothered to do the sums she had her eldest daughter when she was 12!! I don't understand. Age is something over which we have no control and is nothing to be ashamed of. I realise that the girly magazines expect us to look 18 for the whole of our life but if we buy into that it is our own stupid fault.

The number of people who remember my birthday always amazes me. I had phone calls and emails from people that totally suprised me. This is such a good feeling to know that I have great mates who take the time to give me a call. it is also amazing how people's birthdays stay in your head. Despite not seeing my best mate from kindergarten for 20 years I remembered her birthday every year.

Birthdays are a bit like an annual performance review. Have we used the last year wisely or have we squandered it? Do we need to pull our socks up in any areas for the next year, and are there bits of our personal duty statement that we can do without from here on.

If you are having a birthday soon, enjoy. May you be as spoiled as you deserve to be and truly appreciate the people that say "Happy birthday to you."

Oh Happy Birthday! We celebrate birthdays for at least a fortnight as well. Days go by so quickly these days.

Love Eileen
